First down: Minnesota State leads this series 2-0, with victories in 2010 (42-3) and 2011 (42-0). The Mavericks opened the season with a 34-21 win at Mary, while Minnesota Crookston lost its opener 47-0 to Upper Iowa.

Second down: The Mavericks' defense had two big plays, with safety Nathan Hancock returning an interception 72 yards for a touchdown and linebacker Isaac Kolstad returning a fumble 56 yards. ... Senior defensive end Chris Schaudt added to his school record by making the 28th sack of his career last week. ... Minnesota State was ranked seventh in Division II for defending the run last season at 93.2 yards per game, and in the opener, the Mavericks gave up just 22 yards on 21 carries.

Third down: The Mavericks only rushed for 127 yards last week. Only twice last season did Minnesota State rush for less than that, averaging 235.7 yards per game. ...Senior quarterback Jon Wolf had 296 yards of offense, with 249 yards passing. ... With last season's leading receiver Adam Thielen now in the NFL, the Mavericks were going to have a more balanced receiving corps, and last week, seven different receivers caught a pass. Dennis Carter was the leader with four receptions.

Fourth down: Minnesota Crookston gained only 61 yards of offense against Upper Iowa, with -43 yards rushing. ... Defensively, the Golden Eagles allowed 565 yards, with 264 yards rushing. Linebacker Ricky Jacobs made 11 takles, with 2.5 tackles for loss.

Extra point: Kicker Sam Brockshus, the leading scorer in program history and a preseason All-American, made all six of his kicks last week, with field goals of 45 and 37 yards with four PATS.

First down: Gustavus opened the season with a 35-26 victory at Simpson last season, the first time these programs had met in football. The Gusties are 56-36-4 in home-openers.
