MSU takes first loss

ALLENDALE, MICH. — Fourth-ranked Minnesota State fell behind less than five minutes into the match and was unable to recover in a 2-0 nonconference women's soccer loss to Grand Valley State on Sunday.

It was the first loss for the Mavericks in over a year, ending a 24-match on unbeaten streak. Minnesota State's last defeat came at Central Missouri, 2-1, on Sept. 2, 2012.

Minnesota State and junior goalkeeper Molly McGough surrendered their first goal of the season in the fifth minute. That score held until halftime as Grand Valley State held an 11-7 advantage in shots and 6-3 mark in shots on goal.

The Lakers made it a two-goal cushion in the 70th minute.

McGough collected a nine saves, one shy of her career-high. Tori Meinhardt had a two shots on goal for the Mavericks, who were outshot 20-10 on the day and 11-4 in shots on goal.

Minnesota State (3-1, 1-0 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) begins its first full weekend of league play Saturday at Bemidji State.
