Scarlets, Packers split doubleheader

MANKATO — Caleb Johnson and Josh Cook combined on a one-hit shutout Tuesday, enabling Mankato West to salvage a split of a Big Nine Conference baseball doubleheader with Austin at Franklin Rogers Park.

Austin won the first game 9-3 and West won the second 2-0. In the opener Nick Gasner scattered nine hits to get the win. Devin Ries took the loss.

Dylan Gasner was 2 for 4 with three RBIs for Austin. Tyler Stoffel was 3 for 4 for West.

In Game 2, Johnson and Cook combined for eight strikeouts and five walks. Josh Athey went 2 for 3 for West.

Jayme Munsterman delivered the game-winning RBI single in his first varsity at-bat in the second inning. Conor Wollenzien added a run-scoring single in the third inning.

West (3-3) plays a doubleheader Thursday at Albert Lea.

Loyola 15, Maple River 4: Austin Ellingworth and Jake Peller smacked three hits apiece to lead Loyola to the Valley Conference win over at Minnesota Lake.

Andrew Sweere and John Fink shared pitching duties for Loyola. Kyle Reynolds, Shane Sellner and Carson Seifert each ripped two hits.

Michael Lewis took the loss.

Loyola (7-1) plays again Thursday at Truman.

Albert Lea 4, East 3: The Cougars' Brandon Adema allowed six hits, walked two and struck out six in 6 1/3 innings, but took the loss when Albert Lea scored two runs in the seventh inning of the Big Nine game at Albert Lea.

Also for the Cougars, Pat Rohlfing was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Mankato East plays Rochester Mayo Thursday for a doubleheader.
