Mavs to host baseball regional

MANKATO — The ninth-ranked Minnesota State baseball team (35-8) has been selected to host the 2013 NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament as the 48-team field was unveiled Sunday evening.

The double-elimination regional tournament, which we be played at Franklin Rogers Park, runs Thursday through Sunday.

The Mavericks will face Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association-member Missouri Southern (34-20) in the first round of this year’s tournament.

MSU is seeded first, while Missouri Southern is seeded sixth. The two other first round games include: No. 2 Central Missouri (35-11) vs. No. 5 St. Cloud State (34-9) and No. 3 Southern Arkansas (40-15) vs. No. 4 Missouri Western (40-10).

It will be MSU’s 32nd NCAA tournament appearance ranking only behind Florida Southern’s 39 trips to the national tournament. The Mavericks stand 50-51 all-time in NCAA regional play having won six regional titles - 1971, 1979, 1980, 1986, 2010 and 2012. Additionally, it’s the second straight year the Mavericks will host the regional and eighth overall - 1968, 1969, 1971, 1974, 1977, 1988, 2012 and 2013.

Times for the regional tournament will be announced today.
