Scarlets claim three firsts

---- — FARIBAULT — Three Mankato West boys had three first-place finishes in a Big Nine Conference quadrangular track-and-field meet on Tuesday.

Logan Bristol won the high jump clearing 6-feet-1, Ty Kolb won the pole vault (13-1) and Dan Kiecker took the discus (147-8).

Owatonna won the team competition with 78 points, one point ahead of Winona. Faribault was third with 66, followed by West with 50.

The Scarlets’ Will Claussen finished second place in the long jump (19-7 1/2), and Evan Rector was third in the shot put (45-9 1/4).

West’s 4x200-meter relay team took second (1:33.77), and the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 teams were third.

East takes third: Noah Miller was the only winner for Mankato East in a Big Nine Conference boys triangular Tuesday in Rochester.

Rochester Century won the meet with 80 points, taking first in nine of 18 events. Austin was next at 58, and East scored 48.

Miller won the 300-meter hurdles in 44.65. Neil Nienaber took second in the 200-meter dash in 24.44. Also finishing second were Michael Miller in the long jump (17-7 1/2), Nate Lingbeck in the shot put (43-4 1/2) and Calvin Deike in the pole vault (12-6).

The Cougars’ 4x200 relay was runner-up in 1:37.13, as was the 4x100-meter relay in 46.44.

Valley Conference meet: Cade Ekstrom and DaMarko Thomas were triple winners, helping Madelia/Truman/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther win the meet at Mapleton on Tuesday.

Ekstrom won the 1,600 (4:53.43) and the 800 (2:08.98) runs and was part of the first-place 4x200 relay team, along with Thomas, Adam Cooling and Jon Whitney (1:36.5). Thomas also won the 100 (11.26) and 200 (23.05) dashes. Cooling also took first in the 400 (53.39), and Josh Johansen won the high jump, clearing 6-3.

MTGHECML scored 153 points to win the meet. Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial/Nicollet was second with 99, followed by Mankato Loyola/Cleveland (92), Maple River (85), St. Clair (68) and Martin County West (61).

For LCWM/Nicollet, Evan Guffey won the long jump (20-10 1/2) and the triple jump (39-5) and helped the Knight Raiders’ 4x100 relay team to a win (48.25), along with Kenny Fisher, Travis Murphy and Matt Sheetz.

Maple River’s Sam Duncanson, won the 110 and 300 hurdles (16.16, 45.77), and teammate Mitch Stoltzman won the pole vault (11-6).

St. Clair’s Ryan Kruse took the shot put (46-5) and discus (136-3).

For Loyola/Cleveland, Dennis Hoppe took second in the 100, and Charlie Lena was second in the shot put.
