MSU women to play outdoor hockey game at TCF Bank Stadium

Big-time outdoor hockey is coming to Minnesota in January, and the Minnesota State women's team will be one of the first teams to try it out.

On Tuesday, the University of Minnesota announced that it will be hosting the Hockey City Classic at TCF Bank Stadium, the home of the Gophers football team, on Jan. 17.

The doubleheader will feature a women's game between the Mavericks and Minnesota, followed by a men's game between the Gophers and Ohio State.

"We're extremely excited to be participating in the 2014 Hockey City Classic,” MSU coach Eric Means said in a press release. “We anticipate this truly will be a unique event given the fact it's a game being played at a terrific venue, such as TCF Bank, and undoubtedly our student-athletes will be thrilled. We're looking forward to the Mavericks playing the University of Minnesota outdoors in The State of Hockey in January."

The game will be the first of a Western Collegiate Hockey Association series between the Mavericks and the Gophers. The second game of the home-and-home weekend will take place on Jan. 19 in Mankato.

The Hockey City Classic will be part of a Winter Festival, which will consist of a variety of events, including youth, high school and adult hockey events, private ice rentals and a public skate.

Tickets for the college games start at $15. They are valid for both games and will go on sale to the general public on Oct. 22 at or by calling 612-624-8080.
