Doubles teams carry Scarlets to fifth consecutive victory

MANKATO — Mankato West swept the doubles competition to defeat Rochester John Marshall 5-2 in a Big Nine Conference girls tennis match Tuesday.

It was the Scarlets’ fifth straight victory.

West’s No. 1 doubles team of Melissa Lager and Ann Coughlan won 6-2, 6-4, the No. 2 doubles team of Emily Smith and Lia Spencer won 6-2, 6-2, and the No. 3 doubles team of Kendra Allen and Maddie Mueller won 6-0, 6-1.

West also picked up singles victories from Lexi Miller and Lynn Braun.

West hosts Albert Lea on Thursday.

Owatonna 7, East/Loyola 0: Big Nine Conference power Owatonna walked over the visiting Cougars, winning every match in straight sets.

The most competitive battle came at second doubles where senior Caylin Steinberg and freshman Shaya Bartolo lost 6-3, 7-5 to the Huskies’ senior duo of Elizabeth Frandle and Macey Tellijohn.

The Cougars (2-7, 1-4 in Big Nine) host Faribault on Thursday.

Belle Plaine 4, LSH 3: The Tigers won three of four singles matches and added a win at second doubles to down Le Sueur-Henderson in a Minnesota River Conference meet at Le Sueur.

Jane Schneider had the most decisive victory for Belle Plaine at second singles, winning 6-1, 6-1. LSH’s most convincing win came at first doubles where Katherine Cronk and Tracy Eischens won 6-3, 6-0.

In the No. 1 singles match, LSH’s Carlie Brandt downed Ashley Morrison 6-3, 6-4.

Fairmont 6, Maple River 1: Fairmont won the nonconference match against Maple River.

Fairmont’s Allison Molter won 6-1. 6-0, and teammates Sophie Shelgren also won 6-1,6-0.

USC 5, Blue Earth Area 2 : United South Central’sClaire Christian, ranked 10th in Class AA, defeated Karleigh Wolff 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match of the nonconference meet.

USC swept the singles as Lindsey Thisius won 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, Kia Legred won 6-4, 6-4, and Julia Stenzel won 6-3, 6-1.

At third doubles, USC’s team of Emma Barnd and Kelly Neubauer won 6-4, 6-2.
