ST. PETER — Gustavus Adolphus used three rushing touchdowns in the third quarter to spark a 28-21 victory over Simpson College in a season-opening nonconference football game Saturday at Hollingsworth Stadium.
Simpson (1-1) scored in the first quarter to lead 7-0, but Gustavus, which defeated Simpson in the season-opener last season, pulled even at halftime when Jeffrey DuBose scored ona 2-yard run with 26 seconds remaining.
DuBose added an 11-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and quarterback Mitch Hendricks added two more scoring runs in the quarter, covering 53 and 4 yards.
Simpson scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns, but Gustavus was able to run out the clock. Gustavus had a three-minute advantage in possession time.
DuBose finished with 75 yards on 22 carries, going over 2,000 yards for his career. Hendricks completed 27 of 42 passes for 222 yards, and he rushed for 57 yards. Philip Butler made 11 catches for 53 yards.
Joe Haas led the Gustavus defense with seven tackles, and Jake Forcier and Matt Keller each had six. Forcier also had an interception. Gustavus held Simpson to 63 yards rushing.
Gustavus (1-0) opens MIAC play Saturday at Augsburg.
