Thoma: Twins coaching shakeup is open to interpretation

  • In my blog post Friday morning I said the Twins would do well to add a native Spanish speaker to their staff. Ryan appears to have the same idea; that was one of the priorities he mentioned later in the day. Cuellar apparently has the Spanish. Still, if he’s to be the bullpen coach, and if young infielders Pedro Florimon and Eduardo Escobar are immediate reasons for a Spanish speaker, I’m not sure Cuellar is enough.
  • Vavra was a middle infielder in his playing days, so he has a level of on-field expertise in his new assignment. Ullger, on the other hand, was a first baseman not particularly noted for his baserunning prowess; he seems, in that respect, an odd choice over White for outfield-baserunning coach. On the other hand, that was part of White’s portfolio, and Ryan wanted to make a change.
