West’s Deatley qualifies for state

WATERTOWN — Freshman Miranda Deatley qualified for state on the balance beam Friday, helping Mankato West to a fifth-place finish at the Section 2A gymnastics meet.

Deatley stuck her beam routine to score a 9.0 and qualify with a fourth-place finish. She just missed qualifying in all-around by one-tenth of a point but still had a career high 34.975.

Teammate Patrice Sorensen closed out her career in impressive fashion, scoring a career-high 8.75 on vault a week after being named All-Big Nine Conference honorable mention.

West’s Holly Hankins also had a season high 9.125 on vault. Both she and Taylor Amundson earned All-State honorable mention on vault. Deatley was All-State honorable mention on floor and beam.

New Prague won the section title with 148.675 points. West scored 132.825.

Eykyn hat trick paces Waseca boys

LA CRESCENT — Waseca’s J.P. Eykyn scored a hat trick and had one assist in a 5-4 nonconference boys hockey victory at La Crescent Friday.

Wyatt Krampitz scored twice for Waseca and Barry McRaith, Jesse Ungs, Jack Johnson and Brett Whitehurst had assists.

Zac Weichert made 34 saves for the Jays.

Waseca (8-16) begins section play Tuesday.
