Peterson limps off practice field

MANKATO — MANKATO — Vikings rookie running back Adrian Peterson left Thursday morning’s training camp practice with a hip injury.

Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said the first-round draft pick suffered a “little hip pointer” and is day to day.

Peterson, who missed the first three days of training camp before signing a five-year, $40.5 million contract, was injured during full-contact scrimmaging between the offense and defense. He left the field, rode a stationary bike for awhile and eventually walked to the locker room under his own power.

The injury may leave the Vikings without their top two running backs for tonight’s joint practice with the Kansas City Chiefs. Chester Taylor suffered an arm bruise on Tuesday and continued to sit out with his arm in a wrap Thursday morning.

With Peterson and Taylor our, Mewelde Moore and Artose Pinner got extra reps with the first team, and Ciatrick Fason had the longest run of the session, high-stepping down the sideline.

“Anytime a guy goes down, the next guy in line has got to be able to show something,” Bevell said. “Mewelde has done that, Artose has done that.”

Peterson was on the field for the afternoon practice but did not participate.

Bridge tragedy

Both Bevell and defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier expressed their concerns about Wednesday night’s I-35W bridge collapse in Minneapolis.

“My thoughts and prayers are with those people and to ones that met tragedy and also the workers trying to help out,” Bevell said.

Frazier said players were in meetings or on their way to meetings when the accident occurred and head coach Brad Childress allowed players to step out to call family members in the Twin Cities.

Frazier said it did not appear that any players or team officials were directly affected by the accident.
