Sibley East's Retzlaff shooting for state showdown

ST. PAUL — Sometimes, a loss can make you better.

That’s what Sibley East’s Hunter Retzlaff is hoping as he competes at this year’s Class A state wrestling tournament at Xcel Energy Center.

Less than a week ago, Retzlaff reached the finals of his section tournament and jumped to a 2-0 lead over defending state champ Taner Trembley at 138 pounds. Trembley came back, however, to notch a 3-2 win as both wrestlers advanced to state.

“That was frustrating because I had him,” Retzlaff said. “Since then my goal is to get a rematch in the state finals. I want another shot at him.

Retzlaff is two-thirds of the way there as he earned a couple of decisions on Friday to reach the semifinal round of the tournament. His quarterfinal win was a 5-3 verdict over sixth-ranked Derek Herman of United South Central.

Retzlaff will be joined in the semis by teammates Aaron Bates and Nathan Rose. Bates had a decision and pin at 170 pounds, while Rose delivered two first-period pins at 195.

Le Sueur-Henderson advanced two to the semifinals in Austin Anderly at 106 and Chris Pfarr at 152. Anderly had a major decision and a technical fall, while Pfarr had a regular decision and a major decision.

“I think my conditioning is better this year,” Pfarr said. “I’m able to go six minutes with no problem. I wrestled up a lot this year to try to get the best competition I could and I think that helped.”

LCWM’s Trembley did his part to get a rematch with Retzlaff, winning twice at 138 pounds. He had a 19-2 tech. fall and a 3-1 decision.

Teammate Louie Sanders won a pair of major decisions at 120 to advance, including an 11-2 win over seventh-ranked Brandon Sullivan of Pierz.

USC’s Dylan Herman, Derek’s brother, had a regular decision and a pin to stay in the winner’s bracket at 132 pounds. Joining him in the semifinals will be teammate Colten Carlson at 182 pounds.

The area’s other semifinalists include Carter Hanson (160) and Kysten Zierke (195) of Blue Earth Area and defending state champion Adam Cooling of Madelia-Truman/Martin Luther.

The Class A semifinals begin at 11:15 a.m. today.
