WATERLOO, IOWA —
Cody Quinn emerged as the lone champion for Minnesota State University Sunday at the NCAA Division II Super Region 3 Wrestling Tournament.
The seventh-ranked Quinn won the 165-pound weight class with a 4-0 record. He defeated Southwest Minnesota State’s Jacob Begin by a 12-3 major decision in the championship match.
Three other Maverick wrestlers also qualified for the national tournament by virtue of high finishes at the regional.
Fourth-ranked Aaron Norgren advanced with a runner-up performance at 184 pounds. The two-time All-American won three straight matches before falling 2-0 to St. Cloud State’s Shamus O’Grady in the title bout.
At 125 pounds, MSU’s David Demo won his first two matches before losing in the semifinals. He downed Chris Paulus of Upper Iowa 1-0 in the consolation round and then defeated Anthony Bruno of Northern State 5-3 in overtime to captured third place.
Also qualifying was MSU’s seventh-ranked Alphonso Vruno. Like Demo, he reached the semifinals at 133 pounds before getting beat. He came back with a 5-2 win over Phillipe Walker of MSU Moorhead and ended with a 14-4 major decision of SW Minnesota State’s Justin Reinsma to finish third.
The MSU foursome wrestles in the NCAA Division II National Championships on March 8-9 in Birmingham, Ala.
