Scarlets, Cougars set to clash in soccer playoffs

NORTH MANKATO — Mankato West and Mankato East will face each other in Tuesday’s Section 2A boys soccer tournament semifinals after both teams won their quarterfinal games on Monday.

At Dakota Meadows, second-seeded Mankato West defeated Willmar 2-0, while at Thomas O. Anderson fields, East knocked off Southwest Minnesota Christian 3-1.

For second-seeded West, Matt Ouren and Justin Leonard scored second-half goals following a scoreless opening 40 minutes.

Ouren scored on a free kick with 31:48 remaining in the game, and Leonard scored with an assist from Kennedy Maker with 20:03 to play.

The Scarlets had a 4-1 shots-on-goal advantage. Sam Farley got the win in goal.

For East, Brandon Sloniker scored two goals to advance the third-seeded Cougars.

Ben Schwartz had a goal and an assist for East. Abdi Ibrahim and Farhan Mohamud also had assists.

All three East goals came in the first half.

The Cougars had an 8-5 shot advantage. Goalkeeper Nick Olson made four saves for the win.

West and East will play each other at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Dakota Meadows, with the winner advancing to the section championship game on Oct. 19. During the regular season, the teams played to a 0-0 tie and a 3-2 East win.

On the other side of the Section 2A bracket, top-seeded Fairmont ended Mankato Loyola/Lake Crystal Wellcme Memorial/St. Clair’s season with a 7-0 victory in Fairmont. The Crusaders (4-5-1) had four shots on goal. Malik Baxter made 15 saves.

Meanwhile, fifth-seeded St. Peter defeated fourth-seeded Waseca 2-1 in overtime.

Fairmont and St. Peter will play each other on Tuesday in Fairmont.
