Minnesota State forwards come up empty at St. Cloud

ST. CLOUD — Minnesota State senior defenseman Evan Mosey has seven career goals. Four of them have come against St. Cloud State.

Mosey scored the Mavericks’ only two goals in a pair of 5-1 losses at the National Hockey Center on Friday and Saturday, and MSU has started its Western Collegiate Hockey Association season 0-2.

Coach Mike Hastings lamented his forwards’ inability to score goals against the Huskies.

“With our group of forwards, for us to go through the weekend and have Evan Mosey score two goals for us, if you had told me that at the beginning of the weekend I’d have told you we’d be in pretty good shape,” Hastings said. “For the group of forwards that I think we have to be held scoreless, I think is unacceptable — from their standpoint and from ours.”

Hastings wants his team to be more aggressive playing in front of the opponent’s net, going after second and third chances.

“We got to the area a couple times,” Hastings said Saturday. “But we didn’t push it the last 2 1⁄2 feet. That’s the difference between it going in and not going in.”

As for Mosey, he ha played in 52 consecutive games, the longest among all active MSU players. He has 25 points in 88 career games. His goal on Saturday was the first short-handed goal of his career.

Power outage

The Minnesota State men’s hockey team has played six games and has four power-play goals so far.

Three of those came in the first game of the season.

The Mavericks went 0 for 7 with man advantage against St. Cloud State and are now 4 for 30 on the season (13.3 percent). Their opponents are 8 for 28 (28.6 percent), including the Huskies’ 4-for-12 performance.

Rivalry lost

Saturday’s game was the final regular-season WCHA game between the longtime rivals.
