Waseca, St. James advance in tennis

WASECA — Waseca won three of four singles matches Monday on the way to a 4-3 victory over Lake City in the first round of the Section 1A boys team tennis tournament.

The singles winners for the Bluejays were John Lewer 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot, Josh Kimball 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 2 position and Ben Johnson 6-2, 6-1 at the third spot.

Waseca’s only win in doubles came from Andy Haley and John Janssen at the No. 3 position. They won 6-4, 6-4.

Waseca (8-6) faces No. 1 seed Rochester Lourdes Wednesday in Rochester.

St. James 5, Fairmont 2: St. James won five matches in straight sets Monday to advance in the Section 2A team tournament.

John Foss (No. 2) and Killian Wehde (No. 4) both won their singles matches 6-1, 6-0. Will Runge and Aldair Trujillo had a decisive win at first doubles, earning a 6-2, 6-0 triumph.

The Saints play in the section semifinals Wednesday at Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter.
