Saints win section-final rematch over Scarlets

---- — ST. PETER — Emily Lind had two assists as the St. Peter girls soccer team opened the season with a 3-1 nonconference victory over Mankato West on Thursday.

It was a rematch of last year's section final, which St. Peter also won.

St. Peter gained the lead in the 20th minute when Sally Morrow scored a unassisted goal. The scoring continued in the 33th minute when Marta Springer scored a goal, assisted from Lind.

Lind added her second assist of the night on Maggie Anderson's goal in the 56th minute.

West captain Maddie Burandt scored her team's only goal in the 74th minute, and Hannah Fox had the assist.

St. Peter goalie Kaylee Neubauer had 10 saves. West's Katie Lauer made seven saves.

St. Peter (1-0) will play at Worthington on Thursday. The Scarlets (0-1) will play Mankato East at 1 p.m. Saturday at Dakota Meadows Middle School.

West boys 5, Willmar 0: Dillon Lambert scored two goals and assisted on another as the Scarlets opened the season with a nonconference win at Dakota Meadows.

Jacob Makela, Matt Ouren and Justin Leonard scored West's other goals. Danny Collins and Alex Denhof had assists.

West led 4-0 at halftime and outshot Willmar 21-3 for the game. Sam Farley got the shutout win.

The Scarlets (1-0) will play again Saturday at Chanhassen.

East girls 1, New Prague 0: Goalkeeper Emily Flaherty made eight saves, as the Cougars opened the season with a nonconference shutout victory at New Prague.

Rebekah Kolstad broke a scoreless tie four minutes into the second half. Ashley Volk assisted on the play. The Cougars finished with 11 shots.

East (1-0) will play Mankato West at 1 p.m. Saturday at Dakota Meadows.

Hutchinson 1, Loyola boys 0: The Crusaders outshot the Tigers 18-5 as they opened the season with a nonconference loss at home.

Hutchinson goaltender Nathen Thunstorm got the shutout victory.

Loyola coach Lee Miller credited sweeper Reilly Knutson and midfielder Ryan VanBlarcom for their solid play.

The Crusaders (0-1) will play again at noon Saturday at Fairbault.
