West sweeps with key section win

MANKATO — The No. 1 doubles team of Ann Coughlan and Melissa Lager claimed a three-set victory as Mankato West defeated Shakopee 5-2 in a nonconference girls tennis triangular Thursday at the West courts.

West also defeated Worthington 7-0.

In the match with Shakopee, a key victory for section seeding, Coughlan and Lager rallied to win 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. The No. 2 doubles team of Emily Smith and Lia Spencer also won in three sets, 6-7, 6-3, 11-9. The No. 3 doubles team of Lynn Braun and Maddeline Mueller won 6-0, 6-4.

West's Julia Snelson won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2 singles, and Lexi Miller won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.

Against Worthington, West allowed only three points in the four singles matches.

West plays at Northfield on Saturday.

Winona 6, East/Loyola 1: Mankato East/Loyola fell to Winona 6-1 in the first Big Nine Conference match.

At No. 1 doubles, Paige Lingbeck and Katelyn Scharmer defeated Winona's team of Carissa Drackley and Alyssa Estep 6-0, 6-0.

The Cougars have the rest of the week off until their next match, which is home against Rochester Century on Tuesday.

Owatonna 7, Waseca 0: Katie Tlusty and Maddy Knoll lost 7-5, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, the closest match in a nonconference loss to Owatonna.

In singles, Olivia McIntosh dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision.

Waseca (0-4) will travel to the Northfield tournament Saturday.

River Valley 5, Marshall 2: River Valley rebounded from Tuesday's loss with a nonconference victory at Sleepy Eye.

Lauren Laffen, Natalie Stevens and Kacie Goblirsch each earned straight-sets singles victories for River Valley, which also won two of the three doubles matches.

River Valley will play today against New Ulm at Sleepy Eye.

St. James Invitational: St. James and Sibley East both won twice at the rain-shortened doubles meet Wednesday.

St. James defeated Luverne 8-0 and Sibley East 3-0 in a suspended match. Aubrey Eckstrom and Taylor Nordhaus won twice for the Saints. Against Luverne, Hannah Christenson and Anna Haler won 6-7, 6-1, 13-11.

Sibley East defeated Luverne 5-3 and Maple River 5-3.
