Mavs escape with 1-point win at SMSU

MARSHALL — MARSHALL — Minnesota State University trailed Southwest Minnesota State for most of Friday’s men’s basketball game, until the Mavs went on a 24-12 run in the final 6:04 to pull out an 85-84 Northern Sun Intercollegiate victory.

Three Mavericks scored 20 or more points in the win. Jarvis Williams scored a game and season high 27 points, sophomore center Assem Marei added 23 points while sophomore point guard Zach Monaghan scored 20.

Williams was 13 of 14 from the free-throw line and Monaghan was 3 for 4 from 3-point range. Friday’s game marked the second straight double-double for Marei, who finished with 11 rebounds.

Marei nailed a lay-up, putting the Mavericks ahead 12 minutes into the first half. From that point, the game would see seven ties and four lead changes.

The Mustangs went on a 21-5 run to open the second half, bringing the score to 61-48 in favor of Marshall.

The Mavericks fought their way back, cutting the deficit to 81-76 when Monaghan nailed a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 1:32 remaining.

On the ensuing possessions, Monaghan hit two of three free throws and Marei hit a lay-up to trim the deficit to 81-80. From that point, MSU sank five of six free throws to seal the win.

SMSU’s Jordan Miller scored 25 in the loss, including a 3 at the buzzer to make it a one-point game.

MSU (7-1, 3-1 in NSIC) plays Sioux Falls at 6 p.m. tonight.
