Minnesota State men's basketball team adds ‘big’ guard

MANKATO — The Minnesota State men’s basketball team needs another shooter to balance the size inside, and it looks like one has arrived.

Coach Matt Margenthaler hopes that Derrick Denny, a 6-foot-3 guard, is the answer.

“He’s a big guard who can really shoot it,” Margenthaler said. “He gives us some options because a lot of teams are sagging in to try stop the bigs.”

Denny, from Oneida, Wis., has transferred to Minnesota State from Kansas City Community College where he played from 2008-2010. He signed with Jacksonville State but was ineligible and had to sit out all of last season. He ended up at Minnesota State this summer.

However, he needed to take an online course so that he could become eligible beginning next semester.

Denny, who began practicing with the team Monday, holds the Kansas City Community College record with 213 3-pointers in two seasons. In the 2009-10 season, he shot 46.1 percent on 3-pointers and 84.4 percent on free throws, averaging 17.7 points.

Minnesota State is shooting 39.1 percent on 3-pointers and 71.2 percent on free throws. Zach Romashko is shooting 46.2 percent from the arc, while Jimmy Whitehead (3 of 4) and Jaymeson Moten (9 of 21) are both shooting better than 40 percent.

The Mavericks (8-1, 4-1 in Northern Sun) are off until Jan. 4 when they play at Augustana.
