MANKATO — Central Missouri didn't make many shots, so the defense had to be pretty good.
The Mules held Arkansas Tech to 29.6 percent shooting, including 3 of 22 from 3-point range, in a 56-44 victory Saturday in the quarterfinals of the NCAA II Central Region men's basketball tournament at Bresnan Arena.
Central Missouri (25-5), the No. 2 seed, led 9-0, but a late seven-point run allowed the Wonder Boys to pull even at 26 at halftime. The game remained close until Charles Hammork sparked an 11-point run to give the Mules a 45-32 lead with 10 minutes to play.
Hammork scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half, making 7 of 14 field goals. The rest of the team was 14 of 47 (29.8 percent) as the Mules didn't score for the last 3:42.
However, Arkansas Tech wasn't able to find the stroke, scoring the last points with 2:20 to play.
Jon Gilliam added 10 points, and Dillon Deck had nine points and nine rebounds.
Nick Wayman scored 12 points to lead the Wonder Boys (21-10), who committed 17 turnovers.
Central Missouri advance to the tournament semifinals against Missouri Southern State at 5 p.m. today.
