ST. PAUL — Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton says his German Shepherd Mesabi will have surgery to remove a tumor.
On Saturday, Dayton wrote on his Facebook page that he didn't go to the Gopher women's hockey game because he learned that Mesabi likely has a cancerous tumor on his spleen.
WCCO-TV (http://cbsloc.al/YmOtra) reports the surgery was scheduled for Monday.
Dayton wrote that he chose 10-year-old Mesabi and his sister, Dakota, from a litter in Coon Rapids in 2002.
If Mesabi's tumor proves to be cancerous, the governor said he probably would not subject the dog to chemotherapy treatments.
Dayton did the same with Dakota, who also underwent surgery for what proved to be a cancerous tumor. She died in 2011.
