Tubby fired by U of M

MINNEAPOLIS — Tubby Smith has been fired as the head men's basketball coach at the University of Minnesota. Smith won his first NCAA tournament game last week when Minnesota upended UCLA before being eliminated by Florida.

The Gophers went 124-81 in overall play and 46-62 in the Big Ten conference under Smith in the past six seasons. With Smith in charge, the Gophers made the NCAA tournament in three of Smith’s six seasons but were knocked out in the first round in 2009 and 2010.

The Gophers managed to win 20 or more games in five of the six seasons Tubby Smith was head coach.
