The Minnesota State softball team ran its winning streak to five games on Sunday by sweeping a doubleheader from MSU Moorhead at Hollingsworth Field. The Mavericks won 8-0 and 8-1.
Anna Cole and Abby Sonner led MSU in the opener. Cole belted a three-run homer in the fourth inning and Sonner added a two-run shot in the fifth.
Cole also had an RBI single and finished 3 for 3 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Kelly Wood and Eryn Edgerton each had run-scoring singles.
Senior pitcher Courtney McKelvogue allowed just one hit in the abbreviated five-inning game. She walked one and struck out four en route to the shutout.
In Game 2, the Mavericks jumped to a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the first and never looked back. Sam Holien drilled an RBI single in the first and smacked a two-run homer in the fifth to lead MSU.
Wood, Emily Bransky and Tatum Klein also had run-scoring singles. Holien, Lindsay Erickson and Jenna Peterson finished with two hits apiece.
Sophomore Brittany Lauterbach pitched all seven innings, giving up one run on six hits with three strikeouts to earn the win.
The Mavericks (25-7, 10-2 in NSIC) are back in action Wednesday with a doubleheader at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa. Starting time is 2 p.m.
