Nicollet County to buy St. Peter movie theater

ST PETER — The curtain has finally fallen on the St. Peter movie theater.

Nicollet County commissioners voted this week to purchase the building for possible office or storage use, but the structure will most likely be razed and used for parking.

“It was a good fit for us because we were looking at other options for added space around the courthouse and this was the cheapest option,” said County Administrator Ryan Krosch.

The county will buy the building, owned by Nicollet County Bank, for $345,000. It’s 2013 taxable value is $672,000.

The bank took ownership of the building after Minneapolis-based Midwest Theatres Corporation went bankrupt in 2010. The company has continued to lease the building and show movies but had not upgraded the projector to digital — something required to continue showing movies in the near future.

The purchase dovetails with the county’s plans to build an office addition between the courthouse and theater building.

The new building will house health and human services, public health, veterans services and other offices. The addition will allow the county to consolidate other offices onto its main campus — such as county attorney offices which are in leased office space off site.

“It keeps everything right on the same block,” Krosch said.
