Betty J. Griffey

CLERMONT, Fla. — Betty Jane Griffey, age 90, of Clermont, Fla., and formerly of Conneaut, Ohio, passed away Saturday, May 3, 2014, at Mike Conley Hospice House, Clermont, Fla.

Betty was born Feb. 3, 1924, in Erie, Pa., the daughter of William C. and Helen (Thayer) Heckman. She graduated from Conneaut High School in 1942 and studied music education and voice at Baldwin-Wallace College for two years. Mrs. Griffey was a World War II Veteran of the U.S. Navy WAVES as a pharmacist mate third class. She was stationed at San Leandro Naval Hospital, Calif., where she was a nurse's aide caring for wounded servicemen.

Betty married Robert L. "Bob" Griffey Sr., on June 8, 1946, (Bob's birthday), in Youngstown, Ohio, and spent nearly 68 blessed years together.

She worked as a nurse's aide at Brown Memorial Hospital (UH Conneaut).

She was a member of the former First United Methodist Church, now New Leaf United Methodist Church, Conneaut, Ohio, where she began singing in the choir as a teenager and served as chancel choir director for several years.

She was a member of the former MacDowell Music Club and for several years sang in the MacDowell ensemble. She was also a member of The American Legion, Clermont, Fla., and American Legion Auxiliary, Conneaut, Ohio.

Betty and Bob moved to Clermont, Fla., in 1986, where they indulged their zeal for golf all year long. Betty was thrilled to have experienced a hole-in-one.  

She is survived by her husband; a son, Robert L. Griffey Jr. of Conneaut; two daughters, Sally Clark and husband, Bob, of Fairview, Pa., and Becky Potts and fiancé, Rich Snyder, of Conneaut; five grandchildren, Rob Coxon, Jason Sherman, Allen Clark, Katy Griffey and Melissa Branthoover; four great-grandchildren, Dillon Scafuro and Taylor, Lauren and Morgan Davenport; niece, Penny Forsythe; and nephew, Randy Snow.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Robert Heckman; her sister, Joan Snow; and niece, Gail Lahti.

BECKER FUNERAL HOME, Clermont, Fla., handled arrangements. Private family interment will be held at Greenlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, North Kingsville, Ohio.
