Harold H. ‘Pete’ Johns (age 81) of St. Peter died Saturday, March 17th at Benedictine Living Community of St. Peter. Memorial service will be 11:00 AM Thursday; March 22, 2007 at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church in St. Peter; burial, with military honors, at 1:30 PM in Woodland Hills Cemetery in Mankato. Visitation will be Wednesday at St. Peter Funeral Home-Klein Chapel from 4 to 7 PM and continues one hour prior to memorial services on Thursday at the church. St. Peter Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Harold was born June 4, 1925 in Kasota, MN to Frederick William ‘Bill’ and Emily (Wills) Johns. He attended grade school in Kasota and high schools in Minneapolis, Joliet, ILL and graduated from Kasota High School in May of 1943. He attended the University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana. In May of 1943 he enlisted in the US Navy, served aboard the US Carterhall taking part in nine invasions in the Pacific during WW II. Harold was stationed at the Philadelphia Navy Yards and Great Lakes Naval Station during peace time. He served aboard the US Cimarron in the Pacific during the Korean War. Harold was honorably discharged in October of 1952. On September 16, 1950 he married Wanda Lucille Ruch at the Federated Church in Cambria, MN. Harold was employed by the State of Minnesota at the St. Peter Security Hospital, retiring on June 4, 1980. He was a member of the St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, a life member of American Legion Post 1982 and Mankato VFW Post 950. Harold enjoyed traveling, Bible study, was an avid reader, had been an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoyed playing cards, cribbage and enjoyed visiting with his shipmates at naval reunions. Surviving is his wife Wanda; one half sister Mary Lou Curry of S. Sioux City, NE; two half brothers Gerald (Connie) Johns of St.Clair and Loren Johns of Trenton, NJ; four sister-in-laws: Vivian (Myron) Johns of Mankato, Phyllis (Lawrence) Haglund of New Brighton, MN, Sandra Litsey of Aurora, CO, Rosemary (Larry) Skramstad of St. Peter; one brother-in-law Clifford Eccles of Mankato; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Harold in death was his mother in December of 1929, his father and step mother, brother Myron Johns in 2005; half sister Elizabeth Johns Eccles; half brother Keith Johns; step mother Beatrice Johns; sister-in-law Ruth (Loren) Johns; his in-laws Orrin and Gail Ruch; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Fred and Marjorie Ruch and niece Wanda Gail Warn.
