Every state legislative seat in the area now has Democratic and Republican contenders as election filing drew to a close Tuesday.
Only a handful of challengers and incumbents filed during the last day, while several candidates filed at the end of last week.
The race to claim retiring Mankato Democratic Sen. Kathy Sheran's District 19 seat got interesting as Libertarian Party candidate Shane Wernsing filed to run against Democrat Nick Frentz and Republican Willa Dailey. Wernsing listed his address as private on his election forms but posted a St. Peter-based P.O. Box number as his campaign address. According to his campaign website, Wernsing lives near Mankato.
In Senate District 24, Faribault Democrat Rich Bailey has filed to run against Owatonna Democratic Sen. Vicki Jensen for her seat. They will compete with Faribault Republican John Jasinski, who filed May 18.
Rep. Paul Torkelson, R-Hanska, filed for re-election in District 16B, which includes Brown County, most of Redwood County and a small piece of Renville County. His opponent is New Ulm Democrat Austin Grossenburg.
Northfield Republican Aramis Wells officially filed to challenge Rep. David Bly, DFL-Northfield, in District 20B as well. On the Democrat side, former state Rep. Darrel Mosel, DFL-Gaylord, filed to challenge Glencoe Republican Rep. Glenn Gruenhagen in District 18B.
Several Democrats filed Friday to run for area House seats. St. James City Council Member Josh Haseman is running against longtime Rep. Tony Cornish, R-Vernon Center, in District 23B. Bev Cashman of Owatonna is once again challenging Republican Rep. John Petersburg of Waseca for the House District 24A seat. Cashman previously ran against Petersburg in 2014.
Rep. Jack Considine, DFL-Mankato, officially filed for re-election Friday. He faces Mankato Republican Adam Isakson in Considine's first race for re-election in House District 19B.
Two Democrats — Barbara Lake of Mapleton and John Lillis of Good Thunder — filed Friday to challenge Vernon Center Republican Sen. Julie Rosen for her District 23 seat.
Republican Rich Draheim of Madison Lake filed Friday to run against Sen. Kevin Dahle of Northfield for the Senate District 20 seat. Draheim won the GOP endorsement earlier this year.
