LE CENTER — An Elysian man accused of siphoning soybeans out of storage bins has landed in jail.
Daniel James Fleming, 31, has been charged with felony theft and criminal damage to property.
Le Sueur County Sheriff David Tietz said Fleming was arrested Friday after a lengthy investigation. In late December, Tietz's office responded to a report of a theft in Kilkenny Township near Waterville. About 500 bushels of soybeans, valued at $5,000, were stolen out of a grain bin on a storage site.
The perpetrator mounted on a makeshift drainage spout onto the storage bin, then used an acetylene torch to cut a hole inside the spout. Grain flowed through the spout into a grain truck parked near the bin.
A similar theft at a site in northeastern Blue Earth County was reported about two weeks later.
A search warrant for Fleming was executed after law enforcement followed up on several leads.
