Bloomin' Irises

Seeing tall, elegant irises in bloom on Halloween probably was considered a strange encounter by trick-or-treaters walking the sidewalks Thursday in the 800 block of Mankato’s South Second Street. The purple beauties growing near the front steps of a house aren’t aberrations. Diane Dunham, a local grower of the plant species that typically flowers in the spring and early summer, said she has three kinds of iris that are rebloomers. “They are more common in warmer areas, but there are some that will grow in Zone 4.” Gardeners who want to purchase iris they can enjoy twice a year should look on plant labels for the words “rebloomers.” The photos on iris labels won’t help distinguish from those that bloom once and those that bloom multiple times. “There’s no difference in how their flowers look.”
