MANKATO — The remains found in rural Mankato last week have been identified as a Minneapolis resident who last was seen leaving the county jail.

The body found last Thursday northeast of Highway 83 and County Road 12 have been identified as Shane Zephier, 23, the Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday afternoon.

Zephier’s cause of death remains under investigation.

Zephier was arrested Aug. 27 and was taken to the Blue Earth County Jail. Zephier was last seen walking away from the jail around 3 p.m. after released.

A hunter found a partially decayed body in a wooded area not far from the jail, the Sheriff’s Office previously said.

Anyone who might have information about what happened to Zephier is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 507-304-4863.

Zephier was arrested by the Lake Crystal Police Department for shoplifting at a convenience store. Zephier also had a warrant, but it was not extraditable.

Zephier was wearing gray sweatpants, a gray sweatshirt and black shoes upon leaving the jail.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office are assisting in the investigation.

Family members have been notified of Zephier’s death, Sheriff Capt. Paul Barta said. Family members had posted missing person fliers on social media and said they believed Zephier was headed toward home in Minneapolis.
