GARDEN CITY — Firefighters from several Blue Earth County towns responded to a hog barn fire Sunday night that took the lives of more than 100 pigs southeast of Garden City.

The fire at the barn at 52766 158th St. was reported at about 10:35 p.m. The barn had to be knocked down to extinguish the flames and about 150 pigs were lost, fire officials said.

The Vernon Center Fire Department covers the area, but firefighters from Amboy, Good Thunder, Lake Crystal and Mapleton also provided support along with a Lake Crystal ambulance crew.

The barn is owned by Brandts Farm Partnership, which is operated from a home at another location.
