ST. PETER — Hy-Vee will be opening a grocery store in the former Shopko building in St. Peter.
Hy-Vee had early this year taken over the Shopko pharmacy in St. Peter after Shopko closed.
"When we purchased the prescription business from Shopko, it made sense to bring a grocery store, too," said Tina Potthoff, vice president of communications.
Potthoff said construction is to start later this summer with opening expected in early 2020.
The St. Peter store, at 36,000 square feet, will be smaller than the Mankato Hy-Vee stores. It will include food service offerings, groceries, flowers and a deli, she said.
The company, which has been expanding rapidly, has built a wide range of grocery stores, from small buildings the size of a convenience store to large ones with clothing and other departments.
Shopko announced plans to close stores last year.
