A Minnesota judge has ordered the state Department of Human Services to restart background checks — and Rick Krant, for one, is relieved.

Krant is an administrator for The Thro Company, a Mankato-based organization that operates more than 330 beds in several independent- and assisted-living facilities. Without the judge’s ruling, Thro would have been unable to hire new staff until the state shutdown was resolved.

Ramsey County Chief Judge Kathleen Gearin also ruled Thursday that several services should continue, including emergency aid programs and blind training.
