MANKATO — A Minnesota State University student athlete died unexpectedly after a brief illness.
Adam Ellingson, 20, was hospitalized Saturday night and died Monday night.
Ellingson was a second-year MSU student and a member of its baseball team, according to a statement from MSU Athletics.
"In Adam's relatively short time on our campus and with our program, he had already made a significant impact and was successful both on the field and in the classroom," the statement said. "Adam modeled the attributes of commitment, passion, and leadership and he will certainly be missed by his teammates and coaches who will honor his memory in moving forward."
A university spokesman said the cause of Ellingson's death is unknown and an autopsy is being conducted.
The Rochester native was a 2015 graduate of Rochester Lourdes High School, where he played baseball and football.
