NEW ULM — Four public and private schools in New Ulm are receiving a grant to support their work to encourage students to walk and bike to school and to get them there safely.

New Ulm is receiving a $77,000 Safe Routes to Schools grant, the Minnesota Department of Transportation announced Wednesday.

The funds will be used to hire a coordinator to boost initiatives at Jefferson Elementary, New Ulm Middle School, St. Paul's Lutheran School and St. Anthony Elementary over the next three years.

The coordinator and partners will review the existing Safe Routes to School plan, and continue and expand programs such as bicycle safety clinics, crossing guard training and Walk and Bike to School Day events.
