The Herberger’s store in downtown New Ulm is temporarily closed after a fire broke out Saturday in a crawl space, damaging the store’s building and merchandise.

The amount of the damage wasn’t immediately known.

Officials say the fire started Saturday evening after the store had closed and employees had left the building. No injuries were reported.

Fire Chief Paul Macho said the blaze was confined to a 20-by-20 crawl space between the second floor and the ceiling. The extent of smoke and water damage wasn’t clear, but Macho said at least one store room in the shoe department had water damage.

Officials are investigating the fire’s cause.

Store manager Rollo Lentz said the store would stay closed until further notice. But he said there would be no layoffs.
