MANKATO — The Mahkato Wacipi Education Day received an honorable mention in the Humphrey School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota's annual Local Government Innovation Awards.

The Mahkato Mdewakanton Association, Mankato Area Public Schools and Minnesota State University were recognized for organizing an annual education day that teaches Mankato area sixth-graders about the history and culture of the Dakota people. The interactive educational event is held in conjunction with the annual Mankato powwow in Septemeber.

The Mankato event was honored in the native nations category, which recognizes innovative collaborations between a tribe and local government.
