A 45-year-old Mankato man is facing possible assault charges after he allegedly attempted to take back a car that was being repossessed.
John Fitzgerald Thomas was arrested after police received a report of a disturbance at the intersection of Fourth Street and Elm Street at about 7:45 p.m. Monday. A 2005 Cadillac STS was being repossessed from Thomas when he allegedly got inside the car and drove it off a tow truck.
The man repossessing the car, Nate Zimmerman of Janesville, attempted to get through the driver’s window of the car and stop Thomas, a Mankato Department of Public Safety report said. Thomas sped away, reaching speeds of about 40 mph, with Zimmerman sitting in the window and holding on to the roof of the car.
Thomas eventually stopped the vehicle and Zimmerman recieved only minor injuries.
