LAKE WASHINGTON — A woman who died from injuries in a crash near Lake Washington last month was driving in the wrong lane, according to search warrant being used to gather information about the collision.
Jody Volk, 44, who lived on the north side of Lake Washington, was traveling west on North Shore Drive (Le Sueur County Road 103) when she veered into the eastbound lane, the woman driving the second car involved in the crash told investigators. That woman, 18-year-old Madeline Maruska, called 911 at 1:53 a.m. Feb. 22 to report she was trapped in her 2012 Honda Civic in a ditch near the intersection with Sunrise Trail.
Maruska was taken to the hospital in Mankato to be treated for injuries to her right leg. Volk was taken to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester after she was found unresponsive and not breathing in a 2012 GMC Acadia Wagon. Volk died Feb. 26 at the hospital.
When interviewed by a Le Sueur County sheriff's deputy at the hospital in Mankato, Maruska said she was traveling east on North Shore Drive when she saw the wagon approaching her at a high rate of speed, according to an affidavit used to acquire the search warrant. Maruska said the wagon was swerving before it veered into her lane and struck her car, sending it into the ditch.
Deputies reported smelling a strong odor of alcohol in the passenger compartment of Volk's car. They also reported smelling alcohol in bodily fluids on Volk's clothing. A blood sample was taken from Volk for the investigation, the affidavit said.
Investigators who reconstructed the crash reported finding marks in the eastbound lane that led them to believe both cars were in that lane when they collided. They also noted both cars were found in the south ditch after the crash, which also suggested they had both been in the eastbound lane.
Investigators are using search warrants to gather information from computers on both cars and from the cellphones used by Volk and Maruska.
Volk was a cosmetologist and active member of the Mankato area community who was married to Troy Volk, president of Volk Transfer. Maruska is a Mankato West High School senior and member of the gymnastics team.
