Besides the economic crisis, there are other issues that deserve attention because of their far-reaching consequences.

The Freedom of Choice Act, as proposed by President Obama, would eliminate all restrictions on abortion, such as the Parental Notification Law which we have here in Minnesota, according to a Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life newsletter. Instead of providing “freedom of choice” to parents, FOCA would take away the “choice” of concerned parents who have a right to know about procedures that would affect their young teenage daughters physically and emotionally.

Minnesota passed a Woman’s Right to Know Law, which gives women facts about the risks of abortions and alternatives, so they have more “choices” before undergoing an abortion. FOCA is not “freedom of choice” but instead restricts information and thus lessens “choices.”

FOCA would invalidate the ban on partial-birth abortions, according to MCCL. That cruel procedure, which was outlawed by decisive votes of the Senate and House of Representatives, would once again be allowed.

The most radical part of FOCA is that it would force doctors and faith-based hospitals to perform abortions, according to MCCL. Currently, there is a conscience clause which allows doctors and faith-based hospitals to refuse to perform abortions.

Laws must not be enacted that would restrict a doctor’s or nurse’s right to employment because of their convictions, which are based on medical fact as evidenced in ultra-sound images of the unborn child.

The emphasis is not freedom of choice but rather to restrict the choices of those who want to preserve life.

Recent indications are that instead of enacting FOCA as a whole, Congress may initiate “piecemeal” laws. Please contact your senator and representatives and urge them to consider the various consequences of FOCA.
